Space released in Hostels would accommodate about 50 extra students, and assessing from present surpluses, an additional $20,000 surplus would be expected from Hostel fees by the increase. at maximum, the Dining Hall would cost $15,000 a year to run, not includ-
Therefore, ing maintenance of building, fittings and furniture (say $10,000 = $25,000).
This sum could be saved by centralizing buying and the three present cooking systems, and would be additional to a rise in quality of food. Even if it were not saved, the estimated surpluses on increased numbers could carry more than 3 times that amount.
As an extension of the Dining Scheme, provision should be made for the laying of 3/4 inch parquet flooring in all University Hostels, Students' Rooms and Common Rooms, but excluding Corridors and Bath Services.
No assistance other than from Hostels Surpluses is asked for the implementation of this project, and its extension.
7. STUDENTS' UNION
The building of an adequate Students' Union is a project of first priority. The derelict Union, plus the adjacent Bungalow, was found to be far from adequate for our prewar numbers of 572.
It is recommended that a Students' Union be built, containing twice the accommodation of the derelict Union building, a rebuilt Eu Tong Gymnasium, a Swimming Bath and Squash Courts.
